USO INADEQUADO DE METILFENIDATO PARA MELHORIA DO DESEMPENHO ACADÊMICO: UMA REVISÃO INTEGRATIVA
Abstract
Methylphenidate is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant, structurally related to amphetamines, and is one of the most prescribed drugs for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, a neurobiological disorder with genetic causes that appears in childhood and often persists throughout an individual's life. However, methylphenidate has been used for non-therapeutic purposes, such as producing euphoria and obtaining cognitive enhancement, reducing feelings of tiredness, and increasing focus and attention. Thus, the objective of this study is to analyze the benefits and harms of using methylphenidate to improve academic performance, as reported in national and international literature. This integrative review included a search for articles in the Pubmed/Medline, Lilacs, and SciELO databases. Primary research, available in full and free of charge, published between 2018 and 2023, and in English and Portuguese, was included. Ten articles meeting these criteria were analyzed. The results showed that the inappropriate use of methylphenidate by students is mainly aimed at improving academic performance. However, while the alertness generated by the drug may give the impression of helping students excel in their studies, long-lasting rebound stress is a major disadvantage and is responsible for triggering a vicious cycle of addiction. Therefore, it is inferred that although the use of methylphenidate has positive effects on university students in terms of improving academic performance, the potential harm can outweigh these benefits.

O Metilfenidato é um fármaco estimulante do sistema nervoso central (SNC), estruturalmente relacionado com as anfetaminas, sendo um dos mais prescritos para o tratamento de transtorno de déficit de atenção e hiperatividade, um transtorno neurobiológico, de causas genéticas, que aparece na infância e frequentemente acompanha o indivíduo por toda a vida. No entanto, o metilfenidato tem sido utilizado para fins não terapêuticos, para produzir euforia e obter aprimoramento cognitivo, reduzindo a sensação de cansaço e aumentando o foco e a atenção. Desta forma, objetiva-se analisar, na literatura nacional e internacional os benefícios e malefícios do uso do metilfenidato para a melhoria do desempenho acadêmico. Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa, em que a busca dos artigos foi realizada nas seguintes bases de dados: Pubmed/Medline, Lilacs e SciELO. Foram incluídas as pesquisas primárias disponíveis integralmente e de forma gratuita, publicadas entre os anos de 2018 a 2023 e nas línguas inglesa e portuguesa. Foram analisados 10 artigos que atendiam a esses critérios. Os resultados evidenciaram que o uso inadequado do metilfenidato em estudantes visa principalmente a melhoria do desempenho acadêmico. No entanto, a vigília que a droga gera pode dar a impressão que a droga ajuda os alunos a se destacarem nos estudos, contudo, o estresse rebote duradouro é uma grande desvantagem sendo responsável por desencadear um ciclo vicioso de dependência. Logo, infere-se que mesmo que o uso do metilfenidato apresente efeitos positivos nos universitários no que diz respeito a melhora no desempenho acadêmico, é notável que malefícios podem prejudicar essa positividade
